Taking Back the Streets: Bike Ride for Sexual Assault Awareness | West Town Bikes | Friday, 21. April 2017

Join us Friday, April 21, 2017 for Taking Back the Streets, a bike ride to raise awareness of sexual assault. We are survivors, advocates, and allies that believe bikes are tools of empowerment and plan to take back the streets of Chicago, making our voices heard!

We meet at 6:30 PM, ride at 7:00 PM. All skill levels and all genders welcome to join.

No harassing the harassers. We are riding through some of the highest reported areas. Do your air, brakes, chain, tire and quick release check before riding.

The This ride is a collaboration between West Town Bikes and Working Bikes in partnership with Esperanza Health Centers and Rape Victim Advocates for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.

For more info or to volunteer to ride marshal, contact jean@workingbikes.org.
  • Seriously so sad I'm working )-:
  • Via ride leader Danni: "Come on out. No harassing the harassers. We are riding through the highest reported areas of harassment. There will be a half way point. Do your air, brakes, chain and tires quick check before we leave. See you soon!"
  • Joseph Villanueva
  • So glad this is happening. Thought about the need for this at the last World Naked Bike Ride I did--when there was so much sexual harassment along the ride. Any other mamas thinking of biking with their LOs, BTW?
  • is there a map of the route somewhere?
  • Ride will end in Wicker Park. After ride social gathering will be at Dimo's Pizza-open to all ages! โœŠ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ•
  • What's the purpose of this ride? We worked with Esperanza Health Centers to identify neighborhoods in Chicago with high rates of reported sexual assault. The route we mapped out for the ride will go through some of these areas. Hence the name Taking Back the Streets.
  • We're looking for marshals to help with ride security: corkers (blocking intersections), sweep (communicating with riders--making sure everyone stays right, no drops, pointing out any obstructions, glass, potholes), SAG (seeking experienced mechanics for bike repairs). Email jean[at]workingbikes[dot]org to signup to volunteer. We'll be training some time next week before the ride (Sunday or Monday evening).
  • Why are there so many cool rides when I'm out of town? :(
  • Thanks Esperanza Health Centers and Rape Victim Advocates for collaborating with us at Working Bikes and West Town Bikes.
  • Aww I'm out of town otherwise I would have totally done this!
