Steelhead Falls Wildflower Hike | Steelhead Falls Trailhead | Tuesday, 02. July 2019

Hike Rating: Moderate; 2.2 miles
Guide:  Marilynne Keyser (mtkeyser@gmail.com; 541-923-0558)
This three hour hike will focus on native plants, including spring wildflowers.  Of course, the incredible Cascade Mountain views from the rim, the geological marvels and Steelhead Falls itself will also be highlights.  Meet at the Steelhead Falls Trailhead parking lot at 9:00 am. Our hike will take us downriver past Steelhead Falls to the site of FANs Monarch Way Station before we head up to the canyon rim.  We will hike south along the canyon rim until we connect with a trail back down to the parking lot. On guided hikes, FANs has special permission to hike through private property to access the rim and make a complete loop back to the trailhead.  This permission does not extend to any other individual or group.
The Steelhead Falls Trail is in poor condition despite FANs continuing efforts to counter the damage caused by heavy recreational usage. (HEADS UP: Join FANs on April 20th for a stewardship project to work on this!) The private trail up to the canyon rim is steep, gravelly and slippery.  Good hiking boots are required, and trekking poles will be helpful.
Bring your Guide to the Native Plants of the Deschutes Canyon Area.  Guide books will be available for purchase before the hike ($10/FANs members or S12/non-members, payable with cash or check).  A free plant checklist will also be provided.  Also, bring water and a snack.
Group size is limited to 10 people, and dogs are not allowed on this hike. If you sign up and later need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that people on the wait list can be invited to join this hike.  Thank you!
The Steelhead Falls trailhead parking lot is located at the end of River Road on Crooked River Ranch.

This event is sponsored by Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs), a group founded in 2011 by landowners surrounding the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area in Central Oregon who came together over their shared love of nearby public lands.  The focus area of FANs includes many special places such as Steelhead Falls, Alder Springs, the Peninsula, Otter Bench and Scout Camp.  Become a member by visiting our website at www.fansofdeschutes.org.  Memberships are just $10 per person per year.
