The young indie-pop artist Braden Lam was already having the night of his life—celebrating his home-recorded album Driftwood People at a sold-out Halifax bar—when a woman he’d never met pulled him aside. Two years later, they’re getting married.

“Habit of My Heart,” the slow-building, expansive first single from Lam’s third EP, is a tribute to his relationship, a critical season of growth and stepping into a new self. Recorded on Prince Edward Island with Colin Buchanan (Paper Lions, Adyn Townes, Sorrey), his new album sees Lam looking beyond the four walls of the bedroom he made Driftwood People in, and seeing a more complex world. But first there is this love song, which marvels with subtle humour about what life can suddenly offer up.

Inspired by the honest storytelling and heart-pulling melodies of songwriters like Tim Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Maggie Rogers, Lam’s own craft is a study in the day-to-day, with a sharp, specific eye and a knack for expressing observations universally. As “Habit” builds from its Baker-esque piano chords into a rollicking full-band anthem, it expands beyond its literal boy-meets-girl story into maturity, rethinking and rebuilding old patterns, and being open to the future. It fades out in the chaos, declaring over and over, “it’s a habit of a heart in love.”

Lam’s new album is due this fall.
