Digital ThinkIn: the end of national government & the rise of regionalism? | Wednesday, 03. June 2020

Taking power from national government and giving it to the regions might be a start in rebuilding after the pandemic. How would it work?

“Take back control” was the great war cry of Brexit, but the clamour to bring power closer to home does not need to stop at the national border with the EU. The pandemic has revealed a national government that was slow to respond, secretive, and held together by a handful of people who often looked overwhelmed. It also presents a chance: to question everything and reimagine how we live. Should cities and regions now be given the chance to guide the way back - with more powers to raise tax and less interference from national government? Would the future of our care homes, our food supply chains and damaged local economies all look brighter if decision-making happened closer to the people?

Chair: David Taylor, Editor and Partner, Tortoise

Our special guests include:

Sir Vince Cable, a British politician who was Leader of the Liberal Democrats from 2017 to 2019. He was Member of Parliament for Twickenham from 1997 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2019. He also served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills from 2010 to 2015.

How does a digital ThinkIn work?

A digital ThinkIn is like a video conference, hosted by a Tortoise editor, that takes place at the advertised time of the event. Digital ThinkIns are new to Tortoise. Now that our newsroom has closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, we feel it’s more important than ever that we ‘get together’ to talk about the world and what’s going on.

The link to join the conversation will be emailed to you after you have registered for your ticket to attend. When you click the link, you enter the digital ThinkIn and can join a live conversation from wherever you are in the world.

Members can enter their unique members' access code to book tickets. Find yours in My Tortoise > My Membership in the Tortoise app.

If you have any questions or get stuck, please read our , or get in touch with us at email

What is a Tortoise ThinkIn?

A ThinkIn is not another panel discussion. It is a forum for civilised disagreement. It is a place where everyone has a seat at the (virtual) table. It’s where we get to hear what you think, drawn from your experience, energy and expertise. It is the heart of what we do at Tortoise.
