Making Teams Work | Monday, 12. October 2020

Join Matthew Frost and Simon Barrington to look at what makes workplace relationships fruitful, with frameworks and practical tools to try

About this Event

How well do your workplace teams work? When conflict arises, how well is it handled? How empathetic are your team members?

We are pleased to invite you to discuss these questions and more with two former CEOs, passionate about raising up the next generation of leaders.

Matthew Frost (formerly with McKinsey, the Department of Education, and CEO of Tearfund) and Simon Barrington (formerly with BT, the Cabinet Office, and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse UK) will help us to take a look at what makes for healthy relationships in the workplace, from small project taskforces to the E-suite and the boardroom.

Whether in the corporate, public, or charity sectors, Matthew and Simon have found that healthy relationships are foundational to productive teams – and they lie at the heart of effective organisations. Intuitively, most of us would say we know this to be true.

However, we struggle to go beyond run-of-the-mill measures to improve teamwork: clear goals and responsibilities, well-run meetings, better communication. The usual management list often doesn’t reach the real relational issues.

Yet the healing of relationships is at the heart of the gospel, making whole what was broken at the Fall: our relationships with God, each other, work, and creation. By identifying ‘love God’ and ‘love your neighbour’ as the greatest commandments, Jesus encourages us to look at all of life through a relational lens.

So, how can we scratch below the surface and strengthen team relationships in intentional ways? How can we foster more elusive qualities that are essential to workplace effectiveness, like vulnerability, transparency and trust?

Get ready to take notes - Matthew and Simon will offer a variety of biblically-based frameworks and practical tools you’ll want to try out in your own context.

Matthew Frost, Cofounder of Pilgrim Way, Former CEO of Tearfund

Trained as an economist, Matthew began his career in corporate finance with JP Morgan and then Bowater. Following a period with Medair in Somalia and Afghanistan, he completed an MBA at IMD and joined McKinsey as a management consultant. Matthew then moved to the Department of Education to set up a new strategy unit, after which he became CEO of Tearfund from 2005–2015. Matthew has a deep interest and expertise in organisational design and effectiveness and he now works with leaders in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors as a non-executive Director, CEO coach, and organisational design advisor.

Simon Barrington, Author of Leading the Millennial Way, Former CEO of Samaritan’s Purse UK

Having studied Physics and Music, Simon lived in southeast Asia with a mission organisation before joining British Telecom and reaching senior management, including a secondment to the UK Government Cabinet Office as Assistant Director. Simon was CEO of the International NGO Samaritan’s Purse in the UK from 2003–2017. Simon’s strengths are in ideation, developing others, strategic thinking, and activation. In 2017, he founded Forge Leadership Consultancy to raise up a new generation of leaders of character and influence. He is the author of Leading the Millennial Way and continues to research the needs of young leaders.
