Participants will gain a historical perspective on how western art movements reflect the dominant ideas of the time.

Through the exploration and study of art through the ages, you will gain critical perspectives on how we can evaluate and understand art. Next time you are in gallery you be able to look at an artwork and understand things such as;

What makes good art? What is art for? How is it made? How does it apply to other art forms such as gardens? Films? Colour?

The course will be lectured by Mark Beachell, art history connoisseur, multi-disciplinary artist and art tutor. Discussion throughout is promoted where we can heckle, contribute and ask any questions that come to mind!

Mark Beachell read art history at Cambridge prior to gaining a Masters in Contemporary Fine Arts. He is a lecturer in Visual Studies and creates art works inspired by techniques from the renaissance and has passion for creating sculpture from satellite data.

Syllabus

Session 1 - Period Style Classical to Postmodernism

We will begin by exploring the Period Style through the study of architecture. Architecture is the building block from which art ideas have been built and a helpful guide in learning how styles intersect with culture.

Session 2 - Period Style in Western Painting

Art reflects the predominant ideas and values of the time. Painting in Western Art broadly conforms to the same rules of period style that we see in architecture and decorative arts. We'll use the knowelged gained from the previous session to guide us through this next chapter.

Session 3 - Post Impressionism to Late Modernity (The isms )

The closer we get to our era the more complex and fragmented the art world gets. This is when the schools and ‘isms’ predominate; such as Post Impressionism, Expressionism and Surrealism.

We will delve into the modern art world that split artists into paradigms relating to reacting to questions such as - What is the purpose of art?

You may drink Absinth mid-session.
