Intermediate Modern Workshop with Tristan Koepke, accompanied by Terrence Karn on Saturday, January 20th, 10:30am - 12:15pm | $20

Class description: This class with explore the balance of clarity, versatility, and individuality necessary for a grounded contemporary dancer and performer. We will move through various modern dance and somatic-based techniques in order to investigate movement principles, such as weight, opposition, fall and rebound, and breath. With attention to healthy alignment, sensation, and physics, we will move between solo, partnering, and group explorations, developing the rigorous and the rambunctious sides within each dancer.

About Tristan: Tristan began dancing in middle school, and continued his formal training in contemporary movement forms at the University of Minnesota. After completing his BA in Dance in 2010, he began performing and touring extensively with many artists and companies, including Zenon Dance Company, Doug Varone and Dancers, ARENA Dances, Chris Schlichting, Vanessa Anspaugh, Morgan Thorson, and luciana achugar.
Tristan has taught extensively throughout the country to all ages and levels of contemporary dance training, including at Gibney Dance in NYC, SUNY Brockport, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and Bates Dance Festival, where he currently serves as Co-Director for the Young Dancers Workshop. Additionally, Tristan helped facilitate K-12 creative movement education throughout pubic schools in Minnesota during his tenure with Zenon Dance Company from 2011-2015.

About Terrence: Terrence Karn began his career as dance musician in 1971 at The Minnesota Dance Theatre, as a dancer with The Andahazy Ballet, and a performer at The Minnesota Renaissance Festival. In 1976 he moved to Houston, TX to work at The Texas Renaissance Festival and began a long standing career as a world music and dance artist in Houston area schools. Terrence has served as an accompanist and Character Dance teacher at the Houston Ballet Academy (1988-2007); Resident Musician in the School of Theatre and Dance at the University of Houston (1999-2007); and Resident Musician in the Department of Dance at Denison University (2007-2011). This summer he will return to the Bates Dance Festival for his 16th year as the Musical Director for the Youth Arts Program and will return to the American Dance Festival for his 5th year as an accompanist. Currently he is the dance accompanist for the Dance Minor Program at UW-Eau Claire and the co-director of Gypsy Dance Theatre. Terrence has composed numerous works for dance companies on planet earth, and has played for over 17,527 dance classes & counting.
