Tool Training: Manual Milling Machine AUGUST 2018 | Artisan's Asylum, Inc. | Thursday, 02. August 2018

This is a 2 session class held on two consecutive Thursday evenings from 7 - 9pm. 
Session 1: Thursday, 8/2/18, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Course Description:
Learn to use the Artisan's Asylum's Bridgeport Mills!
The manual Bridgeport mills in the Artisan's Asylum machine shop are amazingly versatile tools that can be used to machine precisely dimensioned parts out of metals and plastics.
In this class you will learn how to use the Bridgeport mill to perform basic precision machining operations. You will learn about tool selection, selecting spindle speeds, and climb milling vs. conventional milling. You will practice setting up the machine, holding work in the vise, changing tools and performing basic cuts.
This training will give beginning students the information they need in order to safely operate the mill and also serves as a good refresher for people who have not used a mill recently. 
Successful completion of this class will provide students with the knowledge needed to participate in tool testing for the Artisan’s Asylum Bridgeport mills.
Class Goals:

Learn about tool selection for different milling operations
Hold parts using the vise and parallels
Learn about calculating Speeds and Feeds 
Practice changing tools and setting spindle speeds
“Zero” the X, Y, and Z axis
Perform basic cuts in aluminum stock using end mills 
Understand the concept of Backlash 
Learn about climb milling and conventional milling
Clean and oil the mill.

No previous machining experience required. Students must be at least 18 years old and must be able to safely reach all equipment.
What to Bring:
Hair ties for long hair, closed-toed shoes, short-sleeve shirt. All other materials needed for class will be provided.
Instructor Bio: 

Damian Ward teaches basic machining at Artisan's Asylum. Damian has worked on a dairy farm, pulled network cable, worked for Lockheed Martin, and practiced criminal law.
